The xx

The xx are purveyors of sparse, delicate indie pop. Their self-titled debut, released last year, is a shimmering exercise in creating a lush emotional atmosphere with as few elements as possible.

The xx - Infinity

Finnish trio Regina make a strange and lovely kind of indie pop on their 2009 release, Puutarhatrilogia. The sound is lushly instrumented, gorgeously arranged, filled with surprising melodic turns.

Lake Lustre

Chillout ambient act Lake Lustre returns with a new album called Mountain Math, his first release since 2004. Back then, Lake Lustre seemed a little more uptempo (I compared him to Röyksopp when I reviewed the debut release Indecipherabilia), but this new record definitely tilts toward a more ethereal downtempo vibe. Good stuff!

Lake Lustre - Shoplifter
Lake Lustre - Eyelid Flytrap

Indie rockers Citay make an epic, glorious return on the 2010 release Dream Get Together, one of those records that's so good that it restores my faith in indie rock as a genre. I used "epic" and "glorious" to describe the band's 2007 release Little Kingdom as well, but you know what? When a band corners the market on a certain kind of awesome, that's just all there is to it. Admittedly I'm a sucker for lush harmonies and swirling, psychedelic, Brian May-style guitars, but WHO THE HELL ISN'T I ASK YOU? (Ahem.)

I don't typically get that excited about what passes for shoegaze, but Finnish band Pooma nicely integrate a dark electronic sheen into their sound in a way that captured my attention. From the 2007 release Persuader.
