Jori Hulkkonen

New electronica today from Jori Hulkkonen, whose 2009 release Man From Earth is a sleek and thumping affair. For someone who has released 10 albums and a seemingly endless cascade of singles over the years, Hulkkonen still manages to sound futuristic.

Mr. Chop

On the 2009 release For Pete's Sake, multi-instrumentalist Mr. Chop, fresh from collaborations with MF Doom and Pete Rock, turns in 17 tracks comprising "a futuristic mixture of fuzzy psychedelia, funk, jazz and musique concrete informed by years of record collecting and Hip Hop studies." Alrighty then!

Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra

Soulful ambient today from Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra, whose new release II is quietly moody and experimental. As an Apparat fanboy, I first came across Ohara on the wonderful track "Holdon" from the Walls album; his voice has a silky smooth quality that feels effortlessly integrated into the soundscapes on this record.

Imogen Heap

If Imogen Heap ever released an a cappella record, I would be a very happy person indeed. Check out the track "Earth" from her new album Ellipse, in both the full version with lead vocals, and the "instrumental" version which pulls the lead out and allows you to better examine the vocal intricacies that Heap layers to create the track. The rest of the record is of course a delight, but this track in particular has really stuck in my mind since hearing it.

I didn't know how much I needed a psychedelic rock "zombie-musical" until I heard the 2009 release Dead Zone Boys by the band Jookabox, who are clearly crazy people making music for crazy people.

Jookabox - You Cried Me
