Music Go Music

On the 2009 release Expressions, "Italo-disco trio" Music Go Music raid heavily from the late seventies disco & pop playbook to make a guilty pleasure confection. One of the genres they use to describe themselves on MySpace is "melodramatic popular song" - it just makes sense. This album bundles the band's three earlier EPs into one release, for those of you playing along at home.

Music Go Music - Light of Love
Music Go Music - Explorers Of The Heart

Obi Best

Delectably engaging indie pop today from Obi Best, whose 2008 release Capades just finally wandered across my path. It's the kind of record you can easily just put on repeat and keep listening to over and over, discovering a different quirky undercurrent each time.

MarchFourth Marching Band

I got a chance to see MarchFourth Marching Band over the weekend, and was completely enamored of their blazing, kickass funk. It was the kind of funk that you could only really get by deploying five drummers (including a dedicated cymbal player), six horn players, and a powerfully grooving bass player who got the opportunity to strut around the center of the stage like a lead geetar player given that everyone else in the band was trapped behind their instrument mics. Admittedly this new studio album, Rise Up, fails to transmit some of the other essential glories of the band - the alluring majorette squad, the death-defying stilt-walkers, the five-foot tall cowbell(!) - but this music remains an obvious force for Good Times all the same. ("Nightmarika" is presented in anticipation of Halloween, natch.)

Trotter

After coming across an enjoyable EP from Trotter earlier this year, I was delighted to pick up his new full length Positive Culture, a solid dose of soulful grooves along with some nicely integrated remixes (including a great one from All Good Funk Alliance) to mix things up.

T.H. White

On the excellent new electropop record Company Book, "musician, producer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist, bassist and programmer" T.H. White delivers the goods, if by "goods" you mean "sleek'n'groovy platter of hotness." (White also contributed a nifty remix on the recent free Fol Chen remix album, which, did I mention free?)

Younger Brother

Coe tricked me into listening to the 2007 release The Last Days Of Gravity by Younger Brother, on the grounds that it was a project by Simon Posford of Shpongle. I was nervous on the grounds that I saw it listed as "psytrance," but I keep forgetting that every now and then psytrance isn't horrible. Go figure!

Richard Swift

On his 2009 release Atlantic Ocean, quirky pop singer Richard Swift delivers a catchy confection that evokes a jaunty '70s soft rock vibe while simultaneously updating the sound to include cheerfully weird electronics. I have no idea what it all means, but it's an enjoyable melange regardless.

Richard Swift - Atlantic Ocean
Richard Swift - Hallelujah, Goodnight!

Zero 7

The new Zero 7 album, Yeah Ghost, takes a pleasing turn away from the downtempo formula of past releases and into a more experimental electronic vein. Long time fans will still find the older sound infused within these new compositions, but this is one of those excellent cases where a band takes a creative leap and comes up with an inspired new direction.

Zero 7 - Ghost sYMbOL

Camille

I finally got around to checking out the 2006 release Live Au Trianon by one of my favorite singers, Camille. (Don't ask me why it takes me years to catch up to music by my favorite singers - laziness is the only answer.) What the live album beautifully demonstrates is that the vocal tapestry she weaves on her eclectic pop albums comes to life in an unexpectedly excellent fashion with a performance ensemble backing her.

Camille - Au Port (Live)
