Alka

Today brings some excellent indie IDM from Alka, on the 2009 release A Dog Lost In The Woods. I would write more, but in case you hadn't heard, we are in the midst of a TERRIBLE HEAT WAVE so all I can do is chill (and chill out) to this record.

Just for fun, here is a track from Alka's earlier release, Principles of Suffocation:

Deastro

Making the world safe for prog again, it's the return of Deastro, this time with a backing band for good measure. The new album is called Moondagger, and is just as progtastic as his debut, if perhaps even a little tighter and slightly more pop-influenced. Is "electroprog" a new genre?

Deastro - Parallelogram [Via Largehearted Boy]
Deastro - Greens, Grays, and Nordics [via KEXP]

Grizzly Bear

I know I just posted a video from the new Grizzly Bear record Veckatimest a few weeks ago, but I finally checked out the entire album, and I have to say - yowsa that's good! I enjoyed earlier releases by the band as well, but this one's just got a spark that I don't remember hearing before.

Jesca Hoop

Kirby pointed me in the direction of Jesca Hoop, whose 2007 album Kismet is pretty much the definition of the kind of indie pop I enjoy - lush vocal textures, quirky arrangements, heartfelt without seeming cloying. Kismet was so good I ran out to find everything else I could find by this artist, which sadly wasn't much - thankfully, another record is on the way this fall!

Jesca Hoop - Seed Of Wonder
Jesca Hoop - Money

Jon Hopkins

Earlier releases from Jon Hopkins have felt a little more classically ambient, so to speak, but on the 2009 release Insides, Hopkins veers a little more toward an Ulrich Schnauss kind of sound. Hey, whatever works!

Jon Hopkins - Wire
Jon Hopkins - Light Through The Veins

Nino Moschella

I am a sucker for the experimental funk sound of Nino Moschella. For some reason, his music hits me as a more interesting fusion of influences than the closet comparison I can think of, which is Jamie Lidell. I prefer Moschella's tendency toward the genuinely weird, which he accomplishes without sacrificing the swank side of things. From the album Boom Shadow.

Nino Moschella - Time Of Day
Nino Moschella - We Fight

William Orbit

I'll always have a soft spot for William Orbit, having stumbled across his single "Water From A Vine Leaf" back when I was working in college radio; in fact, Strange Cargo III became the soundtrack to a pivotal chunk of my twenties. His last album, Hello Waveforms, didn't quite do it for me, but I was pleased to hear his newest release, My Oracle Lives Uptown - beyond the nostalgia I get from hearing his particularly musical approach to electronica, there's just an excellent energy to this record that is pleasing to hear.

William Orbit - Purdy
William Orbit - Hydrajacked

Tipper - Everything Is Everywhere
Coldcut - Cant Stop The Train
Takagi Kan - Love Break

Dr. Dog

On the 2008 release Fate, indie rockers Dr. Dog provide a solid, infectious collection of vaguely "old-fashioned" sounding rock, occasionally throwing in a horn section or a jangly gang chorus to mix things up.
