Parov Stelar

Austrian artist Parov Stelar impresses mightily on his latest release, Shine, effortlessly blending hints of a range of styles into a sweet concoction - a little bit Mint Royale, a little bit Real Tuesday Weld, a little bit Mocean Worker, even a little bit Gotan Project on one track. Sometimes when an artist weaves all over the map like this, you get no sense of an individual style, but here, the eclecticism all seems part of a singular, delightful tapestry.

Parov Stelar - Come Closer (feat. Kristina Lindberg)
Parov Stelar - On My Way Now (Love Part 2)

Take one part Apparat and two parts Modeselektor and you've got the fantastic collaboration known as Moderat. The group's self-titled debut (aside from a lone single that came out years ago) has been in heavy rotation ever since I picked it up, particularly after seeing them live a few weeks ago in a rare U.S. appearance. Dreamy, iterative, engaging electronica that seems simple at first, but reveals layer after layer upon repeated listening - I guess you could call this IDM, but there's a pleasing pop touch in the mix that opens up the sound in unexpected ways. A total treat.

Moderat - A New Error
Moderat - Rusty Nails

JG Thirlwell

You don't have to be a fan of the Adult Swim cartoon series The Venture Bros to appreciate the awesome soundtrack album by JG Thirlwell - but if you aren't watching The Venture Brothers, you have other issues anyway, so. It's great Friday music for sure.

Viva Voce

Viva Voce are back with another platter of their distinctive indie rock sound. Called Rose City (guess where the band is from, c'mon, guess), the album lived up to the potential on display when we saw the band as a quartet at the Sasquatch Music Festival. Great hooks, great vocals, great production - solid indeed.

Emperor Machine

Thanks for the overwhelming outpouring of sympathy about my cat - er rather, the DEAFENING GODDAMN SILENCE about it. I swear, you rabble are an insolent lot. I get one comment on this blog approximately every four thousand years - you'll all be sorry when I TAKE MY BALL AND GO HOME.

Anyway, we found my cat at the animal shelter, so you get a video today. Lucky you!

St. Vincent

How I spent my summer vacation: went to visit family in Georgia, spent much of the week in a swimming pool drinking margaritas, played a lot of Arkham Horror and a fair bit of poker, got back to Seattle to find our house had been burglarized and my cat was missing, and to top it all off, I immediately got food poisoning from something in the fridge. It's amazing how fast you can burn off a week of complete relaxation mere moments after stepping foot back in civilization.

In other news, here is some great indie pop music to listen to. This St. Vincent lady's got moxie, I tell ya! From the 2009 release Actor.
