State Shirt

On the 2008 release This Is Old, the rocktronica act State Shirt offers up a dense and passionate collection of tracks, skillfully marrying grindy loops and edgy guitars to create a sound vaguely reminiscent of 65daysofstatic, but with a bit more humanity on display.

State Shirt - This Is Old
State Shirt - I Hate California

In other news, I'm taking Friday off from zee blogging for the holiday. See you Monday.

Alias cranks out some reliably crunchy beats on the 2008 release Resurgam, which the Interwebs tell me is Latin for "I shall rise again." It's billed as "abstract hip hop," which is an evocative and essentially accurate genre tag, but doesn't quite cover the additional IDM elements woven into this record. The album features a guest vocal turn by Yoni Wolf of the band WHY?

Friday grab bag

Here's some delightful indie pop from The Mummers, on their 2008 release, Tale To Tell (Part One).

The Mummers - Lorca The Orange Tree

I got a chance to see Secret Machines recently, and was duly impressed with this emotional rock epic from their 2008 release, Secret Machines. For a trio, these guys produce just as dense a wall of sound as ever.

Secret Machines - The Walls Are Starting To Crack

After posting a track Juliette Commagére recently, I was pointed in the direction of Trilambs by PK from Peppermill Records; Commagére apparently guested on several Trilambs tracks under the nom de plume "Boobie Grande." My only concern is that I never knew about these guys before today - holy moly this is ridiculous, and yet so, so tasty. You can get a whole collection of their stuff here.

Trilambs - Borderline

I Am Robot and Proud

Apparently, I Am Robot and Proud makes the loveliest, snazziest electropop in the whole entire universe. I looked into this, and turns out - it's true! From the 2008 release Uphill City.

Friendly Fires

I don't know what "nu-rave" means as a genre description, but apparently Friendly Fires are a good example of it. On their self-titled debut, they kick out a set of edgy dance stompers that feels exciting and intelligent.

Gang Gang Dance

Gang Gang Dance, fine purveyors of tribal electronic experimentalism (or what we here at Comfort Music call "wacktronica" for short), are back with a new record called Saint Dymphna. As all the Interwebs altered me, this is the saint of "the mentally ill, epileptics, runaways and happy families." This music is in no way guaranteed to produce any of those outcomes, but it sure is pleasingly brain hurty to listen to.

Barbara Morgenstern

Barbara Morgenstern is back with another platter full of sublime indie pop; it's electropop-infused but so clearly organic-sounding that it's hard to pin such a simple label on her sound. Obviously I can't understand the lyrics, but the tone at least is both wistful and optimistic - a lovely combo if you ask me. From the 2008 release BM.

"The Box"

Netlabel Peppermill Records dishes out a deliciously weird, eclectic, and often surprisingly fantastic set of TV theme song reworkings on the brand new compilation, The Box. It's a 2-plus hour extravaganza of covers, remixes, and thrashings; the song titles don't always provide adequate clues as to which themes are being used, and sometimes the reworkings are so extravagant that it's impossible to tell regardless. But even though there's something to annoy just about everyone on this comp, there are many sundry treats on hand as well, including tracks by Jason Forrest and The Chap. Go grab the whole thing - it's free!

Friday grab bag

Some lovely indie electropop from Cale Parks came across my path recently, whose 2008 album Sparklace was available for $3.04 at Amie Street last I looked.

Cale Parks - Two Haunt Me

The Moodgadget label continues to offer some excellent techno treats; this week it's an artist called One of Them, from the upcoming EP Tetrised, to be released December 8th. It starts quietly and then takes a hella turn into thumpy goodness about three minutes into its 9.5 minute duration.

One of Them - Sometimes I Feel Like

And here's a vaguely experimental, vaguely funky techno track from Chandeliers, whose debut album, The Thrush, is pleasingly melodic despite its detours into wackiness.

Chandeliers - Mr. Electric

Sounds From The Ground

I haven't checked in on Sounds From The Ground in years, since someone first introduced me to Kin. My loss, apparently; they're still pumping out ambient techno (with hints of ambient dub sprinkled throughout) in a pleasingly old school fashion - you know, because the mid-'90s were so old et cetera et cetera. At any rate, this one handily bears repeating listenings. From the 2008 release Brightwhitelight.

Lowfish makes moody, occasionally crunchy IDM that puts me in mind of some good older school stuff - vaguely Speedy J, slightly Orbital, solid electronica without apology. From the 2008 release Frozen & Broken.
