Pink Martini

Who couldn't adore the beautifully crafted, retro loungestra known as Pink Martini? Their new album, Hey Eugene!, is a solid set of luxurious crooner tunes, backed by a compact studio orchestra that sounds much more expansive than you'd expect. It's a walk down memory lane - except for the part where most of us never really listened to music like this, so it's, uh, timeless. Or something.

Pink Martini - Tempo Perdido
Pink Martini - City Of Night

Oh man, this song is ridiculous, and yet, I can't help but enjoy it. Besides, I do feel love. Seriously. From the 2002 release Reshaken: The Remix Album Project.

Montefiori Cocktail - I Feel Love (Le Hammond Inferno remix)

Uh oh - time to just get down!

Bitrok - My Frequency

Actually, I take that back - it's time to get sweeping, melancholy, and post-orchestral. From the 2007 EP Under Giant Trees by Efterklang.

CD giveaway: might as well stream it!

Congrats to nick, who will be receiving a shiny new mix CD when I get around to mailing it. Thank you all for playing; this seems like a fun thing to do and I'll try to seek out more of these opportunities.

In the meantime, if the Ninja Tune mix sounded interesting, you can stream the whole thing (plus other mixes in that series):

UHT° is a strange mixture of downtempo, acid jazz, global fusion, and occasional hip hop elements; it starts off sounding very innocuous, like any number of records you've heard before, and then just kind of wobbles all over the place in an entertaining fashion for the duration of its 14 tracks. From the 2006 release Ghost Forest.

UHT° - Bluenvironment
UHT° - Alternate Take
UHT° - Dersou Ouzala

CD giveaway: Ninja Tune mix by Darko of Spank Rock

Hey, I thought I'd experiment and try a CD giveaway, since all the other cool blogs are doing it. I have in my grubby hands a mix CD of Ninja Tune music, compiled by Darko of Spank Rock, for the giving away. It's a 45 minute seamless mix of tracks by the likes of Kid Koala, Coldcut, The Herbaliser, Blockhead, Hexstatic, Mr. Scruff, DJ Food, Amon Tobin, One Self, Bonobo, and of course, Spank Rock, among others. Leave a comment on this post, and be sure to include an actual email address that I can reach you at, by no later than Thursday at 8am, and I'll pull names out of a gigantic funny hat to see who gets the goods.

The Dining Rooms

What's that? You don't have enough intense & soulful downtempo in your life? Lucky you - The Dining Rooms put out a new album called Ink earlier this year. It's not breaking any new ground, but the territory it treads is still luscious and worth a listen.

The Dining Rooms - Thank You?

Deep ambient dub today from Deadbeat, on the 2007 release Journeyman's Annual. Listening to the album straight through, the tracks seem to all bleed together into one amorphous soundscape... sometimes when a record does that, you call it "monotony," but with Deadbeat, there's a spark that keeps it weaving in and out of conscious awareness.

Deadbeat - Where Has My Love Gone
Deadbeat - Refund Me

Teargas & Plateglass

Lala finally delivered to my doorstep the 2004 self-titled release by goth techno act Teargas & Plateglass. No, I don't find myself in the mood for goth techno very much at all, but when I do, I dig it on the ethereal side like this.

Teargas & Plateglass - A Book Of Black Valentines (with Lil Gong)
Teargas & Plateglass - Adam's Lullabye (Remix) (with Natacha Atlas)
Teargas & Plateglass - 911 (Remix) (with Oba Funke and Zap Mama)

Friday grab bag

There's something particularly wistful and spacy about this track by Bang Gang that, I don't know, just seemed worth mentioning. From the EP Find What You Get, which you can stream in its entirety here.

Bang Gang - Follow

I used to argue that Styrofoam sounded a lot like The Postal Service, although no one ever believed me. But here, on this remix, I can't help but hear the resemblance all over again. It's not the upbeat, poppy side of PS that is called to mind, but the wistful, emotional techno side, if that makes sense. And if it doesn't - well, it's a cool damn track anyway! From the 2002 remix EP Updates by American Analog Set.

American Analog Set - The Postman (Styrofoam's Just Like the Nineties Never Happened mix)

Who the hell are Kraak & Smaak? I have no idea, but they just put a two CD set called The Remix Sessions, featuring their work on tracks by the likes of Richard Dorfmeister, Jamiroquai, Skeewiff and others. It's a solid set of midtempo dance grooves, and this excellent sample here gives you a sense of the kind of vibe the album displays.

The Budos Band

Please to enjoy this sampling of tracks from The Budos Band, "the unheralded emperors of Instrumental Staten Island Afro-Soul." I'm not sure how much competition they have for that title, but their album clearly establishes bragging rights; if you were a fan of the instrumental album released by The Herbaliser Band, this will definitely be up your alley. From the 2007 release The Budos Band II.

The Budos Band - Mas O Menos

Historically, Squarepusher has always irritated the hell out of me, so I'm not sure what possessed me to check out the 2006 release, Hello Everything. Turns out only two tracks drove me nuts; the rest were actually surprisingly enjoyable, bizarre and iterative tracks that occasionally sound like Tangerine Dream high on crystal meth (which sounds better than you might expect).

Squarepusher - Planetarium
Squarepusher - Rotate Electrolyte
Squarepusher - Plontius
