Friday grab bag
There's something particularly wistful and spacy about this track by Bang Gang that, I don't know, just seemed worth mentioning. From the EP Find What You Get, which you can stream in its entirety here.
I used to argue that Styrofoam sounded a lot like The Postal Service, although no one ever believed me. But here, on this remix, I can't help but hear the resemblance all over again. It's not the upbeat, poppy side of PS that is called to mind, but the wistful, emotional techno side, if that makes sense. And if it doesn't - well, it's a cool damn track anyway! From the 2002 remix EP Updates by American Analog Set.

Who the hell are Kraak & Smaak? I have no idea, but they just put a two CD set called The Remix Sessions, featuring their work on tracks by the likes of Richard Dorfmeister, Jamiroquai, Skeewiff and others. It's a solid set of midtempo dance grooves, and this excellent sample here gives you a sense of the kind of vibe the album displays.

how dare you put american analog set in a category with postal service. have you even listened to their albums? from our living room to yours has the power to be known in a musical revolution. plus that styrofoam mix is at least 2 years old.

a) i was comparing styrofoam, not american analog set, to postal service. it's styrofoam's touch on this track that reminds me of PS.
b) who cares how old the track is? i post whatever i want, whenever i want. this isn't american top 40.
c) how dare i? pretty damn easily actually.

I agree, Styrofoam remind me of the Postal Service too. Same lush pads, glitchy bits, granular synthesis. It's probably not too surprising, Jimmy Tamborello and Morr seem mutually influenced, and then there is the Ben Gibbard vocal on Nothing's Lost..
