The Orb
There was a point in my life when I just plain didn't understand this new-fangled "electronic music". Then Yara dropped some key albums from Banco de Gaia and The Orb in my lap, and I had one of those life-changing experiences where, for the next twelve months, I listened to absolutely nothing but electronic music, trying desperately to catch up. The Orb was always the anchor; I probably listened to Orblivion to the point where I can sing all 70 minutes of it, and heaven knows we had plenty of Ultraworld and UFOrb trips "back in the day". I felt pretty let down by Cydonia, but on a whim, I put Bicycles & Tricycles on my Nomad, and every time a track from on it comes on, I find myself thinking "what is this ass-kicking goodness?" before being pleasantly surprised to learn it's my old pal, The Orb.
There, I think I got all of my "This is a blog so I must include something personal" out of my system for another year.
The Orb recently released a vinyl collection, Orbsessions Volume One: 10 Ultra-Fi Melodies. The set is a little maddening - it's got a "I just tossed this off the other day after a bender" quality to it, which is possibly why it's not getting a wide release, but there's definitely some bouncy fun to be had. The first track here is a veritable "greatest hits" of the samples you've heard throughout their career; possibly not the greatest track in the world, but it's fun. The second track is a nice IDM workout that takes me back just a little bit to the old days.
The Orb - Mummie Don't
The Orb - Yungle
For those who want new Orb that ain't on vinyl, their new CD is Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt. Haven't heard it yet.
Recently on Comfort Radio:
Boom Boom Satellites - bonus track
Makyo - Dakini (sky dancer)
Chemical Brothers - Playground of a Wedgeless Firm

Actually Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt is out on vinyl. I just picked it up the other day, and I must say that it is great - an excellent mixture of the pure ol' skool "The Orb" sound and a new psychedelic semi-house sound.
=)
